We raised over $103,000 at our sixth annual "Women Helping Women" luncheon fundraiser event, which was held June 20 at Zacharias Center ! These funds will be used to support our prevention work and provide our unique and empowering programs free-of-charge to survivors of sexual violence. The importance of this event is magnified, as never before, by the fact that the organization is celebrating its 25th Anniversary year and has undergone a successful name change from LaCASA to Zacharias Sexual Abuse Center.

This amazing event commemorated the organization’s 25th anniversary of service to the community by providing: tours of the facility provided by staff, a dynamite silent auction/raffle, live music provided by the woman’s drumming group “Diamana Diya”, a gourmet box lunch, and an excellent program.

Generously underwritten by Wolters Kluwer US, this year’s event featured:

  • Teresa Bartels, CEO of United Way International.  A long-time support who served as the organization’s first board president, she will provide introductory remarks and her perspective on the organization.
  • Event Emcee Anita Padilla, reporter for WFLD FOX-32 Chicago, who will once again demonstrate her recurring, passionate commitment to Zacharias Sexual Abuse Center.
  • Robin Stone an independent journalist whose work focuses primarily on health, children, families, and parenting. Ms. Stone is author of No Secrets, No Lies: How Black Families Can Heal from Sexual Abuse (Broadway Books, 2004). In addition, she was Founding Editor-in-Chief of Essence.com, where she managed a team of 60 and oversaw special projects. Under her stewardship, the magazine earned awards from Folio, the National Association of Black Journalists, the New York Association of Black Journalists and the Congressional Black Caucus, among others.  She was also an editor at The New York Times, The Boston Globe, and The Detroit Free Press.

Wolters Kluwer U.S. has generously underwritten this year’s event. “Through our sponsorship of the ‘Women Helping Women’ luncheon, we hope to help raise awareness of abuse against women and help prevent it, as well as the need for more people and companies to contribute to support their vital programs and services,” said Zrinka Allen, director of strategic staffing for Wolters Kluwer.

Icing on the cake is that many of the luncheon guests are now pursuing volunteer opportunities here at Zacharias Center. We always need help of all sorts – time, service, and financial support.
